Best video format for YouTube, Discord, WhatsApp, and email

Different platforms, different formats

YouTube prefers MP4. Discord accepts everything but re-encodes unpredictably. WhatsApp wants MP4 under 16 MB. Email clients prefer MP4 but support limited codecs. Export to the wrong format and you'll face compatibility issues, quality loss, or slow uploads. Here's what each platform actually wants.

YouTube: MP4 with H.264 is gold

YouTube recommends MP4 container with H.264 video codec and AAC audio codec. This is the format YouTube expects, handles best, and re-compresses most predictably. Upload at 30-40 Mbps bitrate and YouTube will compress it to 5-8 Mbps for playback, but your archive is safer.

WebM, ProRes, or MOV work on YouTube but aren't recommended. They get re-encoded by YouTube's servers, which wastes processing time and can introduce artifacts.

Max file size: 256 GB (not a real constraint for most creators).

Discord: everything gets re-compressed

Discord accepts MP4, WebM, MOV, and others, but transcodes everything to VP9 at roughly 3-5 Mbps to manage server costs. If you upload a crisp 20 Mbps video, Discord compresses it down to 4 Mbps regardless. The compression is lossy, so higher-quality uploads survive better, but don't expect lossless.

Upload MP4 (H.264) at 10+ Mbps and your video will look passable after Discord's compression. Upload at 5 Mbps and it looks soft. Avoid WebM or unusual formats — stick with MP4.

Max file size: 100 MB (for most users; Nitro users get 500 MB).

TikTok and Instagram Reels: MP4 vertical

MP4 at 1080x1920 (9:16 vertical) is native. Both platforms will re-compress, so start at 12 Mbps. TikTok handles MOV but converts it server-side, which wastes bandwidth. Stick with MP4.

Max file size: 287.6 MB for TikTok, 4 GB for Instagram Reels (in theory — practically, upload under 500 MB for reliability).

WhatsApp: strict file size limits

WhatsApp has a 16 MB file size limit for video. That's tiny. To fit: export at 720p, 30fps, 2-3 Mbps H.264 MP4. Anything larger gets rejected or compressed harshly by WhatsApp.

Pro tip: trim to the essentials and export at the lowest quality that's still watchable. A 1-minute video at 2 Mbps should fit.

Email: MP4 is best, keep it small

Email clients prefer MP4 with H.264 and AAC audio. Attachment limits vary by provider (Gmail allows 25 MB, Outlook 20-25 MB, others vary). Export to fit: use 720p, 30fps, 4-5 Mbps for a file under 25 MB per minute.

Avoid WebM, MOV, or obscure codecs. Some email clients don't recognize them and won't display video.

Streaming services (Netflix, Apple TV, etc.): variable requirements

If you're submitting to Netflix or other platforms for distribution, they have specific specs:

• Netflix: MOV or MP4, ProRes 422 HQ or DNxHR (master quality), 1920x1080 or 3840x2160, H.264 or H.265 for delivery master.
• Apple TV: MP4 or MOV, H.264, 1920x1080 or 3840x2160, 25-35 Mbps bitrate.
• Vimeo: MP4 preferred, supports most codecs, up to 5.5 TB file size.

Check each platform's submission guidelines — they're specific.

MOV format: Apple-native but not universal

MOV (QuickTime) is Apple's native format. It plays on Mac natively but requires software on Windows or Linux. Most platforms (YouTube, Discord, email) support MOV, but they convert it server-side, which wastes bandwidth. Unless you're within the Apple ecosystem, use MP4 instead.

MOV and MP4 can use the same codecs (H.264, H.265). The only real difference is the container format. MP4 is more universal.

WebM format: efficient but not universal

WebM (VP8 or VP9 codec) is 20-30% more efficient than H.264 MP4, so a 10 Mbps WebM quality ≈ 13 Mbps MP4. But not all devices support it (especially older phones, some smart TVs). Use WebM only if compatibility isn't a concern (web-only distribution, for example).

The universal format: MP4 with H.264

If you don't know where a video is going or need maximum compatibility, export as:

• Container: MP4
• Video codec: H.264 (AVC)
• Audio codec: AAC
• Resolution: 1920x1080 (16:9 widescreen, common denominator)
• Bitrate: 10 Mbps (good quality, moderate file size)

This plays on every device, platform, and browser made in the last 10 years.

When to use each format

MP4: Default for everything. Universal compatibility, efficient, proven.
MOV: Only if you're on Mac and not uploading to platforms.
WebM: Only for web-only, when file size is critical and compatibility isn't.
ProRes: Only for professional editing or archival (large files, high quality).

One more thing: codec profile matters

H.264 has profiles (Baseline, Main, High). Baseline is most compatible but less efficient. Main is balanced. High is most efficient but less compatible. Unless you're encoding for very old devices, use Main profile — it's the best balance.
