Slow motion looks cool because we don't usually see the world this way

Slow motion isolates moments that happen too fast for the eye to catch. A water splash, a jump, a punch — slowed down reveals detail and power. But slow motion isn't just pressing a button in post-production. It requires capturing extra frames at shoot time. No frames = no slow motion. Here's how to shoot and export it properly.

Frame rate is everything for slow motion

Your original frame rate determines how slow you can make video without it stuttering. If you shoot at 60fps and want to play it back at 30fps, you get 2x slow motion (half speed). If you shoot at 30fps and try to slow it to half speed, each frame displays twice and it looks choppy.

The rule: your original frame rate must be at least 2x the slow-motion factor.

For 2x slow motion (half speed): Capture at 60fps minimum
For 3x slow motion: Capture at 90fps minimum
For 4x slow motion: Capture at 120fps minimum

Shooting at high frame rate uses more storage

120fps is twice the frame count of 60fps, so your file is roughly 1.8-2x larger (codecs compress sequential frames efficiently). A 1-minute 1080p 60fps video at 10 Mbps is ~75 MB. The same shot at 120fps is ~140 MB. You need faster storage (SSD instead of spinning disk) and larger SD cards.

Lighting matters more for high-fps shooting

Each frame captures less time (1/120th of a second vs 1/60th). This means less light hits the sensor per frame, so darker scenes become grainy faster. Compensate by:

  • Increase lighting: Use more lights or move closer to your subject.
  • Open your aperture: Wider aperture (lower f-number) lets more light in, but reduces depth of field.
  • Increase ISO: Higher ISO brightens the image but adds noise.
  • Reduce shutter speed: Longer shutter captures more light, but increases motion blur (which is fine for slow motion).

What slow-motion playback actually means

When you "play at half speed," the software displays each frame for twice as long. So a 120fps clip played at 30fps means: frame 1 displays for 4 frames worth of time, frame 2 displays for 4 frames worth of time, etc. The result looks smooth because there's plenty of frames to fill the playback time.

If you shot at 30fps and try to play at 15fps (2x slow), you only have 30 frames to fill 60 frame's worth of time. Each frame displays for 2x as long, which looks choppy.

Exporting slow-motion video

When you export, set your export frame rate to the intended playback rate. Example: if you shot 120fps and want to deliver 30fps slow motion, export at 30fps. The editor will extract every 4th frame from the 120fps clip, creating a smooth 30fps video of the slow-motion version.

Don't export at 120fps and expect the viewer's player to slow it down — most platforms play at whatever frame rate you provide. Set it right at export.

Mixing frame rates in the same timeline

If you have 60fps normal-speed shots and 120fps slow-motion shots in the same timeline, your editor handles the frame-rate conversion automatically (usually). But for consistency, match your timeline frame rate to your primary content. If most of your video is 30fps, set timeline to 30fps. Slow-motion clips (at 120fps original) will be added at reduced frame rate automatically.

When slow motion looks bad

Not enough original frames: 30fps original slowed to half speed looks choppy. Need 60fps minimum.

Interpolation: Some software artificially creates frames between real frames ("optical flow" or "interpolation") to fill gaps. It looks uncanny for dramatic moments. Avoid unless desperate.

Wrong subject: Slow motion emphasizes motion, so fast, dynamic subjects work best. A person standing still in slow motion is just a person taking a long time to stand still.

Slow motion with audio

If your slow-motion clip has audio, slowing video to half speed should also slow audio to half speed (for sync). Most editors auto-sync audio to video, so this happens automatically. But if you're exporting, make sure audio playback rate matches video playback rate, or they'll desync.

Slow audio sounds like a record player slowing down — eerie and disorienting. For slow-motion impact shots, mute the slowed audio and replace with music or SFX.

Storage and bandwidth

High-fps recording requires fast storage. Shooting 120fps 1080p to a slow SD card will drop frames. Use UHS-II or faster SD cards, or record to SSD if your camera supports it.

Export at reasonable bitrate. A 120fps 1080p file at 10 Mbps per-frame would be massive (120 * 10 / 30 = 40 Mbps total). Your delivery frame rate (30fps) determines final bitrate: export at 30fps, 10 Mbps, and the file is reasonable.

Shutter speed: 1/240 or slower (2x frame rate, roughly)
ISO: As low as lighting allows
Codec: H.264 (most cameras use this)
Resolution: 1080p or 4K (some cameras cap at 1080p for 120fps)

The pragmatic slow-motion workflow

1. Identify the moment you want in slow motion (the impact, the splash, the jump).
2. Shoot at 120fps (or highest fps your camera supports).
3. Record the whole scene, not just the slow part (you need setup).
4. In post, place the 120fps clip on your timeline, set its speed to 50% (or 25% for 4x).
5. Export at your desired playback rate (30fps for cinema, 60fps for smooth).
6. Use music or sound effects for the slowed section — real audio slowed down sounds wrong.

One more thing: use slow motion sparingly

Slow motion is powerful because it's rare. A whole video at slow motion loses impact. Use it for moments: the climax, the reveal, the celebration. Punctuate normal speed with slow moments for maximum effect.
