Frame rate is more than smoothness

Most people think frame rate is just about smoothness — higher fps = smoother motion. True, but incomplete. Frame rate also determines how motion feels, how much data you store, and whether slow-motion is even possible. 24fps feels cinematic. 60fps feels real-time. 120fps feels hypersmooth and slightly unreal. These aren't accidents; they're deliberate aesthetic choices built into the frame rate itself.

24fps: the cinema standard

Movies and streaming shows use 24fps. Why? Tradition started with film reels (24fps was the standard), but it stuck because 24fps feels cinematic. Motion is slightly softer, less jarring. Action feels impactful because there's more perceived motion blur between frames. Documentaries and narrative films look "right" at 24fps.

Downside: you need to capture at least 24 original frames to slow-motion it. You can't take 24fps footage and slow it to half speed without interpolation (creating fake frames), which always looks slightly off.

30fps: broadcast and streaming

Broadcast television, news, and most streaming content uses 30fps. It's a compromise: smoother than 24fps, but less data than 60fps. On a 60Hz TV, 30fps still has a repeated-frame cadence (each frame displays twice), so it's not perfectly smooth, but it's the standard because it's efficient and looks natural for most content.

YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram all handle 30fps natively. If you export anything, 30fps is the safe default.

60fps: realtime and sports

Games, sports broadcasts, and real-time video uses 60fps. It matches most modern displays (60Hz monitors, 60Hz TVs) with one-to-one frame mapping — no duplication, perfectly smooth. Fast motion (sports, action camera footage) looks crisp without blur at 60fps. Conversations and talking-head videos look slightly too smooth (the "video mode" effect on phones), which is why many creators stick to 30fps.

Downside: 60fps is 2.5x the frame count but only ~1.5-2x the file size (codecs compress the extra frames efficiently).

120fps and beyond: specialty uses only

120fps, 144fps, and 240fps are captured for slow-motion or ultra-smooth fast motion. You rarely watch content at 120fps natively; you slow it down or keep it as an option for creatives. Most platforms cap playback at 60fps anyway, so 120fps footage gets downsampled on playback.

Capture at 120fps only if you plan to use it for slow-motion (2x or 4x slow-motion looks smooth) or if you need ultra-detailed fast action.

The aesthetic difference: why it matters

Motion blur is the key. At 24fps, each frame captures 1/24th of a second of motion — if something moves fast, it blurs across the frame. This blur feels cinematic. At 60fps, each frame is 1/60th of a second — less blur, crisper motion. At 120fps, even less blur, almost hyperreal.

This is why switching from 24fps to 60fps footage of the same scene makes it feel different — not just smoother, but more "real" or less dramatic. Editors choose frame rate partly for technical reasons (slow-motion capability), but also for mood.

Mixing frame rates: be careful

If you mix 24fps and 60fps in the same timeline, the editor has to either slow down or speed up one of them, or repeat/drop frames. This looks jarring. Pick one frame rate for a project and stick with it.

Exception: if you're intentionally using high-fps slow-motion shots (recorded at 120fps, played at 30fps), that's a deliberate effect, not a mismatch.

What frame rate should you shoot at?

Talking head / interviews: 24fps or 30fps (cinematic or broadcast standard)
Vlogs and tutorials: 30fps (native to most platforms)
Action / sports: 60fps (smooth fast motion)
Slow-motion planned: 120fps or higher (to maintain quality at half or quarter speed)

Frame rate and file size

Doubling frame rate doesn't double file size. A 1-minute 24fps video at 10 Mbps is roughly 75 MB. The same video at 60fps at the same quality is roughly 110-120 MB — only 50% larger, not 150%. Codecs are smart about compressing similar frames in sequence.

The pragmatic choice

If you don't need slow-motion and you're unsure: shoot 30fps. It's the universal standard, uploads everywhere, and looks natural. Only go higher if you need smooth fast motion (60fps) or you plan slow-motion effects (120fps+).
